October 27, 2004

so it is

Late at night, the dimly lit streets of the Davis campus are empty and quiet,
streetlights reflecting off the wet ground, hiding in dark grassy corners.

Tonight, like other nights, I biked home late after a long rehearsal-
on the black cruiser I finally broke down and got so I wouldn't crash.
Down trails and through tunnels, wheels whirring, wind blowing.

The weather in Davis is unusual, vacillating between extremes
hot and cold, wet and dry, sunny and cloudy.
And sometimes many of those a day. I hear Iceland is a lot like that.

Even though today was hot, it had rained while I was in rehearsal, and cooled.
I pedaled along in the dark, through a light and icy drizzle
listening to the musical hum of new spokes, my tires through puddles.
thinking about the play, and this and that. Nothing in particular, really.

For just a split second there, on the way home,
I felt like I was in the right place. It felt natural and organic and good.

And with all the things that I feel uncertain about, almost continually,
it was nice to have a momentary reminder of the other side.
